Connecting Your MacBook to a TV: Wired and Wireless Methods
Method 1: Connecting Your MacBook to a TV via HDMI Cable
Let’s begin by discussing how to link your MacBook to your television using an HDMI cable. This setup will allow you to transmit audio directly through the TV as well. However, the ability to establish a wired connection relies on the type of ports available on your specific MacBook model.
If your MacBook features an HDMI port, a straightforward option is to utilize an HDMI to HDMI cable for the connection. For MacBooks equipped with USB Type-C or Thunderbolt ports, a USB Type-C to HDMI adapter can facilitate the connection. For models that include a Mini DisplayPort, you’ll need a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter.
Once you have established the connection, it’s essential to verify the output resolution and audio settings. Here’s how you can do that:
Step 1: Navigate to Settings > Displays.
Step 2: Click on the dropdown menu next to Optimize For and select the name of your MacBook model.
This will adjust the display on your TV to match your MacBook’s screen resolution. To explore additional resolution options, click on Advanced located at the bottom.
Step 3: Turn on the Show Resolution as List option.
You’ll now gain access to a wider array of resolution choices.
Step 4: From the left menu, select Sound, then click on TV Monitor to designate it as your output device.
Method 2: Connecting Your MacBook to a TV via AirPlay
Apple’s AirPlay feature is compatible with several Apple TV models and various Smart TVs from brands like Sony and LG. Ensure that your TV supports AirPlay by checking the manufacturer’s official page. Once confirmed, follow these steps to connect your MacBook wirelessly through AirPlay.
Step 1: On your Mac, click the Control Center icon located in the top-right and select Screen Mirroring.
Step 2: Choose the name of your Apple TV model or any Smart TV with AirPlay support.
Step 3: When your TV starts displaying your MacBook’s screen, go to Settings on your MacBook.
Step 4: Select Displays > Optimize For > and choose your MacBook to adjust the output resolution.
Again, explore the resolution choices under Advanced options and pick from the available selections.

Method 3: Connecting Your MacBook to a TV via Screen Cast
Another convenient method is using the Screen Cast feature available on Android TVs or Chromecast with Google TV for wireless connectivity from your MacBook. This feature works particularly well for streaming videos through your web browser, and we recommend using Google Chrome for the best experience.
Step 1: Launch the browser and start a video on YouTube.
Step 2: Click the Screen Cast icon located within the playback controls.
Step 3: Choose your Android TV from the list to begin casting the video.
If you decide to discontinue casting, simply click the Screen Cast option again and select Stop Casting from the upper right corner.
To cast your entire desktop:
Step 1: Open Chrome on your Mac, then go to Settings > Cast.
Step 2: Click on Sources and select Cast Screen.
Step 3: Select your TV model name to initiate the casting of your MacBook screen.
Once again, you can modify the resolution and audio output in the Mac’s Settings window. To stop casting your screen, simply select your TV model again.
