How to Share Passwords on Android with Family Members Using Google

Password Sharing in Google Password Manager

Google has introduced a new feature in its Play Services update that allows family members to share passwords through Google Password Manager. This enhancement aims to eliminate the common frustration of needing to access accounts after hours.

When sharing a password, the recipient family member will receive it in their own Google Password Manager. Note that this functionality is available exclusively to members of the same Google Family group and cannot be shared across different accounts.

While the feature is currently limited to mobile devices, it provides a seamless solution for households relying on shared services like Netflix or Amazon Prime.

How to Use and Who Is Eligible?

To utilize this new feature, ensure your device is running the May 2024 Google Play Services Version 24.20. If you haven’t received the update yet, it will roll out to all eligible devices soon. Follow these steps to share passwords:

  1. Access Settings: On your Android device, go to Settings, then navigate to Passwords and accounts.
  2. Open Password Manager: Locate the Password Manager and search for the desired service to share.
  3. Share the Password: Tap the share icon, select the family member to share with.
  4. Complete the Share: Tap Share to finalize the process.

Note: If your device’s interface varies, you can access Google Password Manager by searching for it directly.

Why Use Google’s Password Sharing on Android?

1. For Sharing Common Passwords Like Netflix

This feature streamlines access to commonly used accounts like Amazon Prime and Netflix, allowing up to six members of a Google Family group to log in without repeatedly asking for credentials.

2. More Secure Alternative

Using Google Password Manager for sharing passwords is more secure than sending them through messaging platforms, reducing the risks of exposure to unauthorized viewers. Each family member receives a dedicated copy in their secure password manager.

3. Parents Sharing Passwords With Kids

This feature simplifies sharing educational resources or account access with children, ensuring ease of use while maintaining a degree of security for online activities.
